AI Research Tool — Master of Contemporary Education

The goal 

To build an AI tool that supports vocational lecturers to better understand and respond to the literacy and numeracy needs of their learners — making expert LLN knowledge more accessible at the point of teaching through a lens of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) for blended learning.

How I am doing it 

I am developing a locally hosted AI model, fine-tuned on New Zealand-specific data including LNAAT assessment data, Adult Learning Progressions, and Universal Design for Learning content. The tool is designed to run privately and securely, without relying on commercial cloud services — keeping learner data where it belongs.

Where I am at 

Currently in the development and testing phase, with blind testing planned to validate the tool's effectiveness. This project sits at the heart of my Master of Contemporary Education research and reflects my belief that AI in education should be evidence-based, culturally informed, and built for the learners and kaiako who need it most.
